On the ranch, we see new life and death. The whole cycle. Last year you may remember when we lost Ada and her unborn lambs or that ramlamb of Tinkerbell’s that was stillborn. We experience these and internalize them in a corner of our hearts, often leaving ourselves more thankful for the life that does come. By the end of the day, I concluded that although the unique journey of pregnancy, childbirth, and the relentless phases of childrearing lived by one woman is what makes a mother… the actual state of being a mother isn’t the child itself but the act of mothering. No one or no act can take that from any woman—any mother. It is showing unconditional love and caring for a soul outside of yourself. It is putting the needs of another before yourself no matter the hour or your fatigue. It is protecting them but also giving them room to learn and grow and explore, even when it physically hurts your heart to separate so. All to keep another little soul happy, safe, and nourished so that they can grow into themselves and do more good. Anyone can mother another, but on mother’s day, we honor the unique energy that only can come from a woman who loves another in profound ways.
