The seasonal emoji I’m into right now is the evergreen Christmas tree. The evergreen is a symbol of peace, wisdom, and longevity. It is incredible that its constant presence through the harshest snow and ice, its ability to bend in the strongest winds, and its perseverance to be licked by flames yet thrive.

We chop them down and honor each bough with sacred trinkets, often reminding us of our generational heritage. We care for it with long drinks of water despite its numbered days. We bask in the contrast of dark, steady boughs and light during a time of darkness and inwardness; this specially dedicated tree draws us out and into its artificially crafted light.

It reminds us of where we came from, of sacrifice and reward, and it opens us up toward the future.

While boughten and handmade gifts burst from under its boughs, the tree guides our eyes and hearts upwards, from large branches to the tip stretching into the beyond. It reminds us that Christmas is rooted in celebrating abundance and togetherness. Still, it also brings our focus to what counts as historically we’d be navigating the lean months of winter.
