Hello, Subscriber First Name

Clancy and I have been taking advantage of crisp but mild Fall days in the high desert! It has been a gorgeous fall with so many lovely days; we keep thinking each beautiful day will be the last, and then we get another!

The lavender, hops, and other perennial flowers are trimmed back for the year, and the garden is put to bed after a week straight of hard frosts. Deer have been nibbling at the squashes left on the vine. We still have pine needles in the yard to rake up, and if I spend any more time thinking on it, I’d have a list the length of my arm of things we could do before winter!

I hope to find some garlic and daffodil bulbs to slip into the Fall soil to enjoy next year. Each year I mean to… and each year, the time slips by with the deed undone.

Just like mastering driving our huge tractor or learning to can. Somethings I want to do but never seem to get around to doing them. In a rush, I can get stressed by what I haven’t managed to do. Just think how short life is! But, then, on the other hand, think of the decades there are for us to master handfuls of trades!

I’ll get to these things when the time is right, and I won’t (try to) stress about not having done them for a single moment. After all, there are plenty of things I can do now that I only thought of being able to do once upon a time.

Life at Big Rock is many things, but idleness is usually not among them!

To stave off the chance of idleness, I compiled an archive of all the newsletters I have sent this year. It was an excellent opportunity to organize my effort into what unintentionally has become a newsletter scrapbook!

Halloween is fast approaching, and I’ve got my work cut out for me. Can you tell the costume I’m making for Clancy?

While I say we are never idle here, that doesn't mean we don’t take every opportunity we can to enjoy stillness and slowness with each other and Big Rock. The other day, Clancy and I worked hard to harvest a giant pile of beets. Suddenly, we became distracted by Monty barking wildly at the hillside above our garden; we had to investigate. Monty would chase deer, and we didn’t see a coyote trot by. Then Clancy got excited and asked if it could be a roary!? Clancy laid with his head resting on me for the longest time, eyes peeled in hopes to spot a roary (mountain lion) that just might have been lurking behind a boulder, watching us. After our rattlesnake infestation, I’d believe it!
