Hello, Subscriber First NameI am shooting from my hip in this email. Remember that work party we had this summer? Newsletter subscribers showed up in boots and work clothes with gloves and shovels, ready to pull noxious weeds in our pastures. After working together, we feasted together on our long table in the shade of our giant blue spruce. Our pastures are gorgeous seas of green grasses and clovers thanks to the one-half day we spent controlling thistle and horehound. Every time I scan our pasture, I remember that day well spent in wholesome company. We all left satisfied from an entire morning of hard work, with cups full from the camaraderie and breaking of bread in togetherness and the consensus was that we all wanted more. Nathaniel and I discussed over dinner what our next ranch workdays could be? Here is what we came up with; workdays for each season: That means that our next work party will be tree planting! We may be getting ahead of ourselves as we have to procure said trees to plant, but there has got to be some around here, ready to find a permanent home to improve the biodiversity of Big Rock. So we will be looking for fruit varieties and hardy deciduous trees and varieties for the area. We will be digging holes, planting trees, setting up tree bladders(I think), and building sturdy tree cages out of fencing material to protect the trees and bushes from marauding deer or escaped livestock! So long as we can get trees… Please tentatively mark your calendars for either Friday the 29th or Saturday the 30th of October. The work party will probably be midday or early afternoon, followed by a tasty hot meal around a fire on the back patio at golden hour! We will provide digging tools, a warm fire, and hot drinks, but please dress the conditions and bring your work gloves! Please email if you would like to attend and have a preference of days.
