Happy SPRING, Subscriber First Name!

April showers…

Out here in the high desert, we have to make our own rain since we get less than 10” per year. We are beyond fortunate to have irrigation rights where we are able to put awesome archaic innovation to good use in the form of flood irrigation… basically using ditches to transport mountain run-off water all the way to our ranch and then using smaller ditches and dams to flood the ditch over, letting gravity spread water across our pastures!

Fortunately, we had a decently wet winter. Spring has been very dry but that also means less invasive weeds for us to manage. We have been putting 8 hens from our flock to work in our mobile chicken tractor. They have managed the weeds on the edges of our driveway beautifully.

They have also prepped an invasive weed patch for an extra growing area for a larger garden this year! GO HENS! We are always striving to work smarter and harder!

Speaking of growing and gardening… we are leaps ahead of last year for our own personal salad garden at the ranch! We are harvesting oodles of beautiful mixed greens from our two raised beds that have season-extending covers on them.

We will be harvesting radishes soon but for now, we have spinach, arugula, mizuna, and numerous varieties of leaf lettuces to enjoy!

We recently flew to Nathaniel’s parent’s home in Monterey CA for a week away from the ranch. It was wonderful to be dropped into the end of Spring there with everything, and I mean everything, in BLOOM!

A stark contrast to here as we just now begin to see the lilacs budding up and the iris leaves peaking out of the dry soil.

We enjoyed so much local produce, beaches, and walks but were happy to feel ready to get back to the ranch.

Day one back at the ranch had us irrigating and zipping all over the ranch.

There really is no place like home.
